Clouds #3 (astronaut)

2005, Wall-mounted kinetic video sculpture

The Cloud series was inspired by Alfred Stieglitz’s Equivalent Series (1922-35), a photographic study of clouds as pure pattern. Clouds #3, unusually, has no clouds. A cylinder, painted to represent the moon's surface, is mounted to a motor, which rotates it slowly. A miniature astronaut hovers in the foreground. A live video camera captures this image which gives the appearance of an astronaut suspended endlessly over a spinning lunar surface.
