Quitter is an experimental video that depicts the stakes of breaking with the patterns of modern life- what does life look like without lifestyle? Starring acclaimed artist Eve Sussman, "Quitter" pursues ideas set forth in Paul Schrader's 1972 book, "Transcendental Style in Film." In his text, Schrader examines films that do not merely depict spirituality, but rather embody the transcendental in their form. As Sussman moves through her country retreat, the landscape itself reveals possibilities for salvation. The sound is a fusion of digital and sacred music, stemming from the "Sacred Harp" or " Shape Note" singing of the Appalachians. "Quitter,"the final work in the WORKSTATIONS trilogy, moves the McCoys' architectural investigations into the landscape in order to examine the encroachment of spiritual desire. "Quitter" seeks to question the myth of our separation from nature and posits this as the ultimate assumption to jettison.
"Quitter" is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
